Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. Wine is a significant part of Georgian culture, as well as an entire course of the Georgian economy. It is widely believed that this is where wine production first began, over 7000 years ago. In fact, the word “wine” is derived from “Gvino” – the Georgian word for wine. Archaeological remains suggest that as early as 4000 BC grape juice was being placed in underground clay jars, or also known as Qvevri, to ferment during the winter. The vine is central to Georgian culture and tightly bound to our religious heritage. It is common for families throughout Georgia to grow their own grapes and produce wine. Feasting and hospitality are central pillars of Georgian culture, and traditional banquets are presided over by a toastmaster, or Tamada, who proposes numerous toasts throughout the meal, and ensures the wine flows liberally.
Georgia is a land famed for its natural bounty. These days there are over 500 species of grape in Georgia, a greater diversity than anywhere else in the world, with around 40 of these grape varieties being used in commercial wine production. Georgian wines have a reputation for being exceptionally pure.
Georgia is a paradise for any wine lover.
The French traveler Chardin wrote about Georgians in the 17th century: "Nowhere do they drink so much blossom and such fragrant wine as in Georgia"
Aside from vineyards, Kakheti is known for its medieval monasteries and hilltop churches, many of which date back to the 5th or 6th century. This region is rich in monuments of different periods and diverse nature. Here you will find ancient settlements, distinctive temples, castle towers, beautiful forests, waterfalls, alpine lakes, vast plains, and even a radiant desert. Kakheti is exotic by the isolated, desert and mud volcanoes of the Vashlovani reserve.
The vaguely Tuscan-looking hilltop town of Sighnaghi, UNESCO tentative listed Alaverdi, A rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery, and colorful desert in David Gareja, Telavi - the oldest city of King, wine museums, views of vineyards, and Caucasus mountains are must-see places in Kakheti, Georgia.
Georgian supra is unimaginable without traditional dishes, Kakhetian, pitcher wine, or Shoti bread. Kakhetian gastronomy has a leading place in the unique Georgian table. Here you will taste traditional Georgian dishes, and take part in their preparation, you can bake Shoti bread, squeeze wine, make churchkhela, grill Mtsvadi, etc.
Kakheti is an interesting place in terms of its culture and customs. Kakhetian folklore is noteworthy. "Chakrulo" was introduced to the world. As it is well known, this important sample of Georgian folklore was sent into space.
Ancient history, interesting culture, impressive nature, and resorts make Kakheti very attractive for those who want a pleasant vacation and for travel lovers.
